What is this test?

DHEA sulphate (DHEAS) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that acts as a precursor to other hormones. A DHEAS blood test can help assess adrenal function, diagnose adrenal disorders or investigate signs of androgen excess. DHEAS is measured to evaluate the adrenal function and certain adrenal tumours and investigate the cause of virilisation (excess facial and body hair) in girls and women or early puberty in boys. It is also sometimes used in the investigation of Cushing's syndrome.

Adrenal Function Assessment

The test evaluates adrenal gland activity, indicating dysfunction or disorders.

Hormonal Imbalances

DHEA levels can be affected by age, stress, and certain medical conditions. The test identifies hormonal imbalances as DHEA regulates other hormones.

Evaluation of Certain Conditions

The DHEA blood test is used to investigate and monitor hormone imbalances related to PCOS, androgen excess disorders, and adrenal tumours.

Anti-aging and Wellness Assessments

As part of anti-ageing or wellness evaluations, some individuals may opt to have their DHEA levels checked for this reason.

Monitoring DHEA Supplementation

In some cases, DHEA supplementation may be prescribed to address deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. The DHEA blood test can help monitor the effectiveness of supplementation and ensure appropriate levels are maintained.
