What is this scan?
A pre-conception fertility ultrasound scan is a painless and non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. The scan can assess these organs' health and look for fertility abnormalities.
This scan could be useful if you have:
- Endometrial thickness
- Ovarian abnormalities
- Ovarian cysts
- Fluid in the pelvis
- Fallopian tube conditions (e.g. hydrosalpinx)
- Polyps
- Follicle egg count
- Uterus or ovarian problems
- Pelvic cysts
- Ovarian masses and tumours
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Position of IUD / IUS / Coil
- Pelvic Inflammation

Who is it for?
This scan is ideal for identifying ovulation in the mid-cycle when an egg is released from the ovaries. It helps determine the ovulation period and detect potential ovulation issues. Additionally, it evaluates the health, size, shape, and structure of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, identifying any conditions like polyps, cysts, fibroids, or other abnormalities.
This scan includes:
- Transvaginal (internal) scan when required
- 30-45 minute appointment
- Report and images
- Professional ultrasonographer or consultant gynaecologist
What Can It Tell You?
This scan may be helpful for:
- Abdominal or Pelvic Pain
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (Period)
- Irregular Vaginal Bleeding
- Ovarian Cysts and Screening for Ovarian Cancer
- Congenital Uterine Anomalies
- Endometriosis
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Fibroids
- Fallopian tube abnormalities
How to Prepare for the Scan?
Our medical team will provide specific instructions for your scan. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, as you will have to expose the areas of interest during the scan. We always offer a chaperone if needed.
What to Expect During the Scan?
Before the scan, an ultrasonographer may discuss the procedure, ensuring you understand the process and answer any questions. Once in the examination room, you'll be asked to lie on the examination table. A special ultrasound gel will be applied to the examination area and the probe. The scan is usually performed transvaginally, meaning a probe is inserted into the vagina. This is the most effective way to visualise the uterus and ovaries.
The scan takes about 30-45 minutes.
