Who is it for?

The scan is typically recommended for people with liver or gallbladder disease symptoms, such as pain in the upper right abdomen, jaundice, or nausea. It may also be ordered as a screening test for people at risk of liver disease, such as those with diabetes, obesity or alcohol-related liver problems.

What can this scan tell you

  • Assessment of abdominal pain, which could be related to issues in the liver or gallbladder

  • Detection of gallstones or other abnormalities in the gallbladder

  • Assessment of yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), which can be related to liver or gallbladder dysfunction.

  • Assessment and diagnosis of biliary tract obstructions such as common bile duct stones, tumours or strictures.

  • Detection of benign and malignant tumours in the liver or gallbladder

  • Assessment of the function of the liver (cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, liver tumours).

  • Monitoring chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis or cirrhosis

  • Check the liver and gallbladder's size, shape, and overall structure.

  • Assessment and monitoring of abnormal lesions, cysts or haemangiomas in the liver.

  • Assessment when blood tests indicate abnormal liver function

  • Assessment of the liver in patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse

How to Prepare for the Scan?

Our medical team will provide specific instructions for your scan. However, here are some general things you need to do:

It is important to avoid eating or drinking for 6 hours before the test to ensure clear visibility of the gallbladder and a successful scan. You can drink clear fluids.
